Nuclear Physics Conference 2003

Published: 9 April 2003

International conference to be hosted by the University of Glasgow on 9-11 April 2003

The University of Glasgow will be host to an international gathering of academic experts and students at this conference.

A diverse range of modern atomic nuclear structure research, ranging from nuclear astrophysics to the interface between nuclear physics and particle physics will be discussed over the three-day gathering.

Current "hot-topics" such as the possible existence of "Tetra neutrons" (exotic particles consisting of four neutrons) will be on the agenda while other areas to be discussed highlight the wider contribution of nuclear physics academic research in an area of national importance. For example, a DTI presentation will comments on the current shortage of skilled personnel in the area of nuclear physics.

As Dr Dave Ireland from the University of Glasgow's Department of Physics & Astronomy explains, " Areas such as nuclear medicine and the management of radioactive waste require trained personnel, and academic nuclear physics is one of the main suppliers since it trains students to PhD level. A shortage of trained personnel in this area may well have longer term implications "
