Annual Charity Rodeo for University Vet School

Published: 30 April 2003

Saturday 3 May 11.00am - 5.00pm, Garscube Estate

It's time to dust down the stetson and shine up your cowboy boots. The annual Vet School Rodeo is upon us again on Saturday 3 May 2003 from 11.00am ヨ 5.00pm at the University's Garscube Estate.

The Rodeo is the Vet School's annual charity event that is guaranteed not only to entertain but also raise awareness of important animal welfare issues. The event is organised by students of Glasgow University Veterinary Medical Association (GUVMA) and is the biggest charity fundraiser associated with the University.

The University Rector, Greg Hemphill, will be there on the day at the Garscube Estate to draw the raffle at 4.30 p.m. Throughout the day, there will be events taking place in the main arena every half hour ranging from Falconry, Husky Dogs and Police Dog displays to a fun dog show (the waggiest tail, looks most like owner etc) and duck herding by sheepdogs! Be sure to bring your camera.

Over the past few years, the Rodeo has greatly expanded in size, allowing it to raise more money for its nominated charities. Last year, despite a clash with the Scottish Cup Final, the event still attracted in excess of 3000 people, all enjoying an entertaining and informative day.

This year's nominated charities are -

Pet Fostering Service Scotland: Established in 1985, this charity aims to provide temporary homes for pets whose owners are unable to care for them for whatever reason.

Riding for the Disabled Association (Glasgow Group): This group aims to provide the opportunity for disabled people to ride or drive. It is hoped that in doing so, they might benefit from improved general health and well being as well as imply enjoying themselves.

Greyhound Awareness League: This group rescues and re-homes ex-racing and abandoned greyhounds and lurchers. All dogs between homes are housed with foster families, as the charity has no permanent kennels, and it is run entirely by volunteers.

Shona Morrison, Rodeo Convenor said, 'We are hoping to have a great turnout from our local community as we'd love to top last year's total of £3000 which was distributed to our nominated charities.'
