Hi I'm Bella, a Graduate Apprentice Software Engineer who works on the UofG Life App.
I am a very curious person.
In high school, this led me to be very drawn to physics, and other technical subjects, but most of all computing science. Even so, I was never sure I wanted to study it at University.
I decided to take a gap year to make my mind up. I learned to develop Android apps, discovering the joy of being a developer and making tangible (mostly) working things. At the same time I worked as a children's gymnastics instructor and travelled to Rome, which helped me find my identity and passion for people.
My gap year's reflections led me to apply to my current position. A practical graduate apprenticeship where I could work in a team, learning and doing at the same time. It was the best decision I ever made. My vocation is literally figuring out how things work, all the time! In my spare time I have a range of hobbies: I practice gymnastics and am the captain of Glasgow University Gymnastics Club (Instagram: @gusagymnastics), I'm very involved in my local community, and I play Minecraft with whatever time is left!
What does it mean to be a Graduate Apprentice Software Engineer?
As a Graduate Apprentice Software Engineer, I have the unique opportunity to study while I work! Each day presents me with fascinating challenges that extend beyond just coding. Being a graduate apprentice at the University of Glasgow allows me to take what I learn as a student into real-world scenarios, gaining invaluable experience along the way.
What do you enjoy most about supporting the UofG Life App?
I take great satisfaction in knowing how beneficial the app is for fellow students. The thought that my contributions are making a positive impact on real people's lives is incredibly rewarding.
What have you seen as the biggest advances in app technology, and what is your favourite app?
My favourite app is Fossify Calendar! It serves as an excellent organizational tool and stands out as a fantastic open-source alternative to Google or Outlook Calendar.
In my opinion, the most significant advancement in app technology isn't necessarily about the technology itself, but rather our improved ability to design user-friendly interfaces that enhance the overall experience
