Through my internship, I had the opportunity to add a student perspective to the work of the University of Glasgow’s Learning & Teaching Strategy. Working on one of the strategy’s projects called Student Skills & Futures, my research helped add value to by bridging the gap between students, and the initiatives planned to improve student skills and employability.

I helped to lead two student panels, where I asked students about the main barriers they face to accessing skills development opportunities and the careers service. The key findings were that financial barriers, lack of awareness of opportunities on offer, and lack of time were the biggest barriers. There also seemed to be a consensus that aside from teamwork and practical skills, skills were not highlighted in their course of study.

At the end of our internship, I helped write a proposal to the workstream, which included engaging students from pre-entry through to graduation, improving marketing for the diverse and time poor student body, and further embedding employability into the curriculum.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a Student Skills & Professional Development Intern. As my first experience in a professional workspace, it helped me build experience working towards deadlines that would impact a wider project. I especially enjoyed working with the team in the L&T Strategy, since they were all incredibly welcoming and willing to assign work that built my skills in research & report writing that I know will be very helpful in the next steps of my career!
