As the University of Glasgow's Sanctuary Champion, I am delighted to invite you to take part in Refugee Week 2026.

Refugee Week is a chance for us to come together as a community to celebrate the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary, while reflecting on how we can all help create a more welcoming and inclusive society. It is a moment to listen, learn, and connect.

This year's Refugee Week takes place from 15–19th June and is inspired by the theme Courage. Courage can be found in many places: in the experiences of those forced to leave their homes and rebuild their lives; in the determination to overcome barriers and uncertainty; and in the everyday acts of kindness, solidarity and welcome that help people feel they belong.

As a University of Sanctuary, the University of Glasgow is proud of its commitment to supporting people seeking sanctuary and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. Refugee Week offers an opportunity to renew that commitment and to celebrate the many individuals and communities who contribute to making our University a place of welcome.

This year's programme has been developed in partnership with GRAMNet and shaped by colleagues and students from across our University community. Together, we have created a diverse and inspiring series of events that invite us to explore important issues, hear different perspectives, and build meaningful connections.

Alongside talks, workshops, films and discussions, a range of ‘Everyday Acts of Welcome’ will take place across campus throughout the week. Whether it is writing a welcome message for someone newly arrived in Glasgow, visiting an exhibition, exploring a book display, or taking part in a community activity, there are many ways to get involved. These moments may seem small, but they remind us that creating a culture of welcome is something we all contribute to every day.

The programme includes opportunities to explore how technology can support displaced communities, hear first-hand perspectives on experiences of refuge and belonging, engage with creative workshops, enjoy film screenings and discussions, and connect with others through informal community gatherings. There is something for everyone, whether you are new to these conversations or have long been involved in supporting sanctuary initiatives.

I encourage all staff, students, alumni, partners and members of the wider community to take part in whatever way they can. Every conversation, every act of welcome and every opportunity to learn from one another helps strengthen the values of equality and inclusion that are at the heart of our University community.

I look forward to seeing many of you during Refugee Week and to celebrating the courage, creativity and connections that make our community stronger.

Best wishes,
