Leadership Transition Announced for Technician Commitment at University of Glasgow

Professor Frank Coton will step down from his role as Senior Vice Principal at the end of the month, with Professor Jo Gill announced as the new Chair and Champion of the University’s Technician Commitment Steering Group.
The University of Glasgow has announced an upcoming transition in the leadership of its Technician Commitment Steering Group, as Professor Frank Coton prepares to retire from his role as Senior Vice Principal at the end of the month.
Professor Coton has served as both Champion and Chair of the Technician Commitment since the University became a signatory. Throughout this time, he has played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the University’s commitment to supporting technical staff, overseeing the delivery of multiple action plans and initiatives. These have significantly strengthened the visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability of technical skills and roles across the institution.
A dedicated advocate for the technical community, Professor Coton has taken a strong personal interest in ensuring meaningful progress, helping to embed the Technician Commitment within the University’s strategic priorities and culture.
Reflecting on his time in the role, Professor Coton said:
“It has been a real privilege to serve as Chair and Champion of the Technician Commitment at the University of Glasgow. I have seen first-hand the skill, professionalism and dedication of our technical colleagues, and the vital role they play across every part of our university’s work.
What has always stood out to me is the strength of this community and the way colleagues have come together to drive meaningful change. I would like to thank Ali and everyone involved for their passion, commitment and continued leadership in taking this work forward.
I am absolutely delighted that Professor Jo Gill will take on this role. Jo brings great energy, insight and a clear commitment to supporting our technical community. I know she will build on the strong foundations already in place and continue to champion this important agenda. I wish her every success.”
Following his retirement, Professor Jo Gill (SFHEA), Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Arts & Humanities, will take on the role of Senior Management Group Champion and Chair of the Technician Commitment Steering Group. Professor Gill brings significant experience and a strong commitment to supporting the University’s technical community.
On her appointment, Professor Gill said:
“I'm delighted to be taking over as the new Senior Management Group champion and chair of the Technician Commitment Steering Group. I look forward to immersing myself in this vital area of activity and to working with technicians across the institution.”
This transition provides an opportunity to reflect on the substantial progress made under Professor Coton’s leadership, while also looking ahead to the next phase of the Technician Commitment at the University.
With Professor Gill’s appointment, the University reaffirms its commitment to further strengthening the support, development and recognition of its technical staff, building on the strong foundations already established.
