Within this infographic we show some high-level results from our Colleague Engagement Extended Pulse Survey – Autumn 2022. 

Response rate

4267 colleagues responded to the survey giving a 56% completion rate.  Response rates by job family were 70% from the MPA job family; 53% R&T; 46% Tech; 44% Ops; 35% clinical. Response rates by area were 64% from University Services; 62% from the College of Arts, 57% from the College of Social Sciences, 54% from the College of Science & Engineering; and 49% from the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.

Top responses

Where percentages indicate the "Strongly agree" and "Agree" responses, 86% of respondents said “I feel trusted to do my job”; 80% of respondents said “I am clear about what I'm expcted to achieve in my role" and also "I have not felt bullied/harassed at work in the last 12 months"; 79% of respondents said “I understand how my work contributes to the University strategy”; and 76% said “I have had a constructive conversation about my development with my line manager in the last 12 months”.

Themes

Each of the 27 survey questions are categorised within 9 themes giving us an indicator of how we are doing in each area.  Our top themes were Dignity & Diversity with 80% positive response; My Role & Development with 71% positive response; and Engagement with 65% positive response.

Themes for attention are Culture & Values with 40% positive response; Wellbeing & Balance with 50% positive response and Leadership & Strategy with 51% positive response.

Compared to 2021

Many questions in this survey were also asked in the summer 2021 survey, so we can see how responses have changed in that time. These are the greatest differences for colleagues repsonding either "Strongly agree" or "Agree" to a question from 2021 to 2022:

+6 points "I feel valued for the work that I do"

+6 points "My manager encourages me and helps me to do a great job"

+5 points "My opinion is sought on decisions that affect my work"

+5 points "I believe I have the opportunity for personal development and growth at the University"

-11 points "Decisions are made in a timely and efficient way"

-9 points "The Senior Management Group manages and leads the University well"

-7 points "The Senior Management Group listens to and responds to the views of staff"

-6 points "If asked, I would recommend the University to friends and family as a good place to work"

-4 points "Individual differences (e.g. cultures, backgrounds, ideas) are respected at the University"
