University Regulations
Qualifying Courses (2026-27)
Students studying on the MA or the MA (SocSci) in the College of Arts & Humanities or the College of Social Sciences have additional course-choice requirements, called Qualifying Courses. These Qualifying Courses are presented on MyCampus plans; information is also captured below.
Students should speak to their Advising Team or Adviser of Studies for clarification on these Qualifying Courses and any requirements for enrolment or progression.
College of Arts & Humanities MA
Students must complete:
- By the end of year 1, at least 80 credits of qualifying Arts & Humanities courses at level 1, representing at least two subjects.
- By the end of year 2, at least 40 credits of qualifying Arts & Humanities courses at level 2.
Qualifying Arts & Humanities courses are those offered by the following subjects:
- Archaeology
- Celtic & Gaelic
- Classics
- Comparative Literature
- Creative Writing
- Cultural Industries
- English Language & Linguistics
- English Literature
- Film & Television Studies
- History
- History of Art
- Information Studies
- Modern Languages & Cultures: French, German, Italian and Portuguese
- Music
- Philosophy
- Scottish Literature
- Spanish
- Russian
- Theatre Studies
- Theology & Religious Studies
And
- Only in Year 2, Curriculum for Life Courses (regardless of hosting School/College)
For candidates on a Single or Joint Honours degree programme including Geography, Mathematics, or Psychology, level 1 credits in the subject of the degree will be accepted.
College of Social Sciences – MA (SocSci)
Students must complete:
- By the end of year 1, at least 80 credits of qualifying social science courses at level 1.
- By the end of year 2, at least 40 credits of qualifying social science courses at level 2.
Qualifying social science courses are those offered by the following subjects:
- Business & Management
- Central & East European Studies
- Economic & Social History
- Economics
- Geography
- International Relations
- Politics
- Psychology
- Quantitative Methods
- Social & Public Policy
- Sociology
And
- Only in Year 2, Curriculum for Life Courses (regardless of hosting School/College)
