UK threat level update

The threat level to the UK from terrorism changed from “Substantial” to “Severe” on 3 November.

Institute of Physics award winner

Anthony Clarkson in the School of Physics & Astronomy has been awarded the 2020 Technician Award by the Institute of Physics. A technician within the Nuclear Physics group for 18 years, Anthony has in that time led the development of numerous cutting-edge particle detectors for fundamental physics experiments. The award recognises “his pioneering contribution towards the industrial deployment of cosmic-ray muography technology and his outstanding, ongoing contributions to high-energy, fundamental nuclear physics experiments across the globe”.

Research paper scoops RCGP award 

A research paper which revealed links between missed GP appointments and early death has won the prestigious Royal College of General Practitioners’ 2019 Category 2: Health Service Research award. Dr Ross McQueenie, Professor Alex McConnachie and Dr Andrea Williamson in the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences co-authored the study with colleagues in the universities of Aberdeen & Lancaster.
