GTC boost for Dumfries

The General Teaching Council has awarded an unconditional re-accreditation for the MA course in Primary Education run by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies on the Dumfries campus. A GTC panel praised the quality of the team delivering the programme and the level of student input.

Professor David Clark, the Director of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Dumfries, has announced that after a meeting with a panel from the General Teaching Council of Scotland, the MA course in Primary Education has received unconditional re-accreditation.Crichton&DumfriesCampus

There were several commendations:
•         The quality of the extensive documentation presented to the panel
•         The integration of strategy with government policy and wider international best practice
•         The quality of the team delivering the programme
•         The successful partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council Education Services
•         The extent to which student views and experience had been taken into account in re-shaping the programme
•         The rigour of the selection processes
•         The incorporation of teacher and associate tutor views into the work of the programme

The panel also made several recommendations including the expansion of the proposed international school experience elements of the new programme to further countries and settings, exploration of partnerships with other initial teacher education providers and a continued emphasis on the importance of lifelong learning.

Professor Clark commented: “This has been a major piece of work extending back over many months and requiring significant input from a lot of people within our School and beyond and to whom I have offered my thanks.

“We have fully established our credentials and track record in this area and I am now keen to see us take a wider national role in this regard, continuing to work closely  with our colleagues in the School of Education.”

Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Anton Muscatelli, said it was good news and sent his congratulations to all those involved.
