The University has launched an Academic Leadership Programme for newly or recently appointed Heads of School, Directors of Institute and Deans.

It aims to develop academic leaders in the context of a world class institution which competes globally for the best students and staff.  Its content and structure was shaped after consultation with current Heads, Directors and Deans.Neal Juster

Participants, identified by Heads of College, attend one-day modules covering topics such as strategic planning, influencing others and working internationally.  Specific content is driven by attendees’ needs and interests.

Participants also have the opportunity to reflect on and apply their learning in the context of their own leadership style through a leadership diagnostic and feedback instrument.

Elementa Leadership, an organisation with considerable experience in field of academic leadership learning and development, delivers the Programme.

The 2013 – 2014 Programme began on 29 August with thirteen participants representing all four Colleges.

In his welcoming remarks Professor Neal Juster, Senior Vice Principal, emphasised the importance of strong leadership in ensuring the continuing success of the University. He said the programme was designed to embrace the distinctive nature of academic leadership; it would provide the opportunity to develop leadership not only as Heads, Directors and Deans, but also in the many other academic leadership roles participants are likely to exercise throughout their careers in academia.
