Last week's visit to the University by Sir Alex Ferguson garnered international media coverage from the Huddersfield Daily Examiner to the Huffington Post and including all the UK's mainstream media outlets.

Sir Alex, a veteran of countless battles on the football pitch, acknowledged a generous donation of £1m towards the next phase of the Beatson Pebble Appeal by his friend Malcolm Howat through The Howat Foundation.

The donation is in addition to the previous support given by The Foundation to cancer research at the University of Glasgow, totalling £1.5m.

With scientists and equipment now moving into the new Centre, Sir Alex was given a tour of the building on the Garscube campus and was given a short briefing on the work of cancer research scientists in Glasgow. During his visit Sir Alex was also presented with an honorary degree in recognition of his major contribution to sport.
