Professor John Brown said “I was delighted to hear on October 15 from Alistair Carmichael MP, Secretary of State for Scotland that, in recognition of my ongoing activities as Astronomer Royal for Scotland, the Queen and the Prime Minister have approved open-ended continuation of my 1995-2014 appointment beyond my next birthday so long as I continue to be so active. A year ago I was involved in doubling the population of the village of Glenelg when it welcomed NASA Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar and a host of astronomers to celebrate twinning with Glenelg Mars where NASA's Curiosity Rover is exploring. Six months ago, with Edinburgh amateur astronomers Lorna McCalman and Charlie Gleed I ran a day of talks in Edinburgh on Life in the Universe and an Out of this World Ceilidh, guests including Sir Roger Penrose and Chris Lintott (Skye at Night).

These were interspersed among science. sci-art, sci-magic, sci-theatre projects, talks at schools and festivals. I look forward to striving to live up to this past record.”
