William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the Gaignat sale through his agent, Jean-Baptiste Dessain, for 74 livres 1 sou;  see 'Dessain-Hunter correspondence' (University of Glasgow Library, MS Gen. 36, f.25v).
University of Glasgow:  Hunterian bequest, 1807;  Hunterian Museum bookplate on front pastedown, with former shelfmark “A.7.19”.
Binding: France, 18th-century red morocco decorated with triple gold fillets, a small gold fleuron at each corner;  marbled endpapers;  gilt-edged leaves;  turquoise silk bookmark.   Size:  265 x 182  mm. 
Leaf size: 258 x 175 mm. 
Annotations: Single marginal annotation in a 16th-century hand on 2/5r (f. 11r);  occasional pointing hands;  several substantial passages of text scored through;  foliated in an early hand in arabic numerals “1-76” beginning on 2/1r (f. 7r);  on 10/10v (f. 82v) are added two couplets in a humanist hand - the first headed “Disticom in Laura[m]” opens with the words “Balnea Laura bibit ut sit fecunda ...” 
Decoration: A five-line initial “M” supplied in silver (now oxidized) on 2/1r (f. 7r) is embellished with white vine decoration defined in crimson and green with white dotting;  the white vine decoration extends into the inner and lower margins on a background of dark blue with white dotting;  the lower border is further outlined in crimson and at the centre of the border is an empty shield.  Other initials supplied throughout in alternate red and washed-out blue;  many of the initials have been wrongly identified by the rubricator and corrections in small letters have been added later in brown ink. 
Imperfections: Wanting the blank first leaf.
