Binding: 16th-century blind-tooled calf (heavily worn);  covers decorated with intersecting double fillets to form a centre panel within an undecorated frame;  the panel is divided diagonally by double fillets into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, each containing a fringed foliage tool;  pierced holes on remains of outer edge of front cover are evidence of some form of fastening (now lost);  gilt initials ‘G’ and ‘P’ added onto front and rear covers respectively in 17th/early 18th century.  Binding and contents restored by Anthony Gardner, Jan. 1966;  rebound in goatskin over new oak boards with original covers feathered on;  binder’s note on new rear free endpaper.   Size: 300 × 206 mm.

Anno d[omi]ni cccclxxx’;  note of purchase ‘emt[us] An[n]o d[omi]ni 1529 2s[olidis]’;  frequent underlining and interlinear corrections of text and punctuation in the first half of the book;  several early marginal annotations in Latin (one in Greek);  extensive 16th-century annotation in Latin on 16/6v (f. 152v) continuing onto surviving portion of what was the original rear pastedown;  partial foliation (erroneous) in brown ink in an early hand;  running book numbers ‘1-9’ of the Epistolae on most rectos.
