Being an Active Upstander - Bitesize

Description

This 60-minute bitesize is aimed at helping colleagues, across all areas of the University, to develop an understanding of what it means to be a Bystander and why it is important to become an Active Upstander. This session covers an insight into what could potentially hold us back from intervening, how to become an Active Upstander, what to do before stepping in to intervene safely and most effectively.

Participants will also be encouraged to reflect on their own problematic situations and experiences, whilst developing new ways, approaches, strategies, and skills to support their colleagues at the University, who may be seeking help.

Please note that this course provides examples of microaggressions and in order to explore those in context, we may touch on areas of bullying, harassment, violence, and aggression. If you require support relating to these themes, please visit our Dignity at Work and Study resources.

Pre-work

We ask participants to:

  • reflect on some questions around their own experiences (5 – 8 minutes)
  • read some materials on the ways in which we can become an Active Upstander (7 - 10 minutes)
  • watch a video on Bystander Effect (10 minutes)

Session Approach

The session is delivered using Mentimeter application. Participants will need access to a connected device with a web browser.

The first part is mostly presentation, with participants being asked to interact through answering some questions online anonymously. In the second part participants will be given an opportunity to collaborate in small discussion groups and make a final group presentation.

This session can be delivered online for up to 50 participants or face-to-face for up to 40 participants.

Takeaways

As well as the content covered, participants will be provided with a copy of the session materials and (anonymous) inputs which gives them:

  • a reminder of the differences between passive and active upstanding.
  • barriers of interventions - What holds us back from intervening
  • a breakdown of how to become an Active Upstander
  • a set of suggestions, approaches and strategies for becoming an effective Active Upstander

Bitesize courses are typically delivered online and for larger groups than our face-to-face or longer courses.  We may, on request, be able to offer these specifically for inclusion as part of team building activities such as away days.
