EARLY CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (ECDP)
ECDP is the University of Glasgow’s commitment to developing its early career academics. It aims to develop high achieving, high performing academics who will help the University to deliver its vision and ambitions as articulated in our strategic plan.
It supports newly appointed or promoted academic staff at Grades 7 and 8 in developing their skills, gaining experience, and progressing their careers within a defined timescale. The programme offers tailored development opportunities across all aspects of the academic role helping participants meet the criteria for promotion to Grade 8 within 3 years and Grade 9 within a further 5 years.
ECDP is open to colleagues on the Research and Teaching; Learning, Teaching & Scholarship; and Research-only (PI status and as confirmed by the VP/Head of College or nominee) career tracks.
Welcome to the Early Career Development Programme!
During the first few weeks, it is essential to familiarise yourself with all the key elements, processes and milestones of the programme.
Join our Induction
ECDP Induction welcomes participants to the programme and provides an outline of the key components.
The induction event is a valuable opportunity to connect with fellow ECDP participants from across the University, meet your local ECDP champion and programme representatives, and engage with colleagues who support and contribute to the programme.
Upcoming Sessions (you only need to attend one session):
- Monday 27 October 2025 - 2pm - 4pm
Meet your Mentor
A mentor will be assigned to each ECDP participant within the first month of enrolment.
Mentors are assigned by the Head of School to ensure a good match to support your development journey.
Once you receive your mentor's contact details, we encourage you to reach out and arrange an introductory meeting.
Set Objectives
Setting objectives is a key part of the ECDP. As a new member of the University, once you've settled into your role, agree initial objectives with your line manager, ensuring they align with your ECDP timeline and support your progression to the next level. Initially this will be done via the probation process and then will form part of the annual Performance and Development Review cycle which runs from 1 July to 30 June.
Create your Development Plan
A key element of the ECDP is the Development Programme which aligns with the Academic Promotion Criteria and encapsulates a range of development activities to support participants from Grade 7 through to Grade 9.
Your personal development plan should reflect your unique learning journey. While the mandatory elements provide a strong foundation, we encourage you to explore the wide range of optional development opportunities available through your College, Academic Digital Development, Researcher Development and Organisational Development. Thoughtfully selecting activities that align with your goals will help you get the most out of the programme and shape a meaningful and impactful experience.
