I'm not in the UK - what support can I access?

In common with other mental health support services, Counselling and Wellbeing Service is not permitted to offer therapy to any students currently residing outside of the UK.

Students outside the UK can access the following support services:

Wisdom App
While abroad you can use our Wisom App to access mental health resources and support, including live chat and telephone and video calling. You can visit the 24/7 webpage here for details on how to dowload the app.

The Samaritans

Alongside an organisation called Befrienders Worldwide the Samaritans are helping to offer support lines in many countries throughout the world. You can access information on their local country telephone numbers on their Befriends webpage

Local Healthcare Provider
We would encourage students to speak to their doctor to explore what support is available to them from their main healthcare provider whilst they are outside the UK.

What types of difficulty can you support me with?

Types of difficulties we often see include anxiety and panic, bereavement and loss, relationship difficulties, low mood, self-confidence and self-esteem and navigating significant life changes.

We also provide support around gender-based violence and you can find out more about this on the .

How do we provide support?

We offer a range of support to suit different needs and will work with you to find the approach that’s right for you. One of the most common models we use is called 'One at a Time' (OAAT).

‘One at a Time’ (OAAT) support means that we will offer you one appointment at a time, at the time you need it. Appointments last 50 minutes and will be with any member of the team. Support offered will either be in-person or on online via Microsoft Teams.

Our team are trained mental health practitioners from a variety of different backgrounds and will work collaboratively with you, focusing on the most significant issue you’re facing at the time.

Together, you'll come up with new perspectives and solutions. You then take away what's been most useful and try it out, noticing any changes for the better. This might include taking some action regarding your situation and trying to manage it by putting into practice the ideas, techniques or action plans discussed.

What happens after my first appointment?

Depending on your situation, you might feel that one session has been sufficient for what you need. We won’t automatically book another appointment but will provide you with an on-line booking link to allow you book another session if you feel you need this.

If you wish to re-book, you’ll be able to see what appointments are available. This might be with the same person you met with originally, or with a different member of the team. If you see a new member of the team, they’ll work with whatever you bring to the session.

You won’t be able to book in again for 2 weeks, in order to allow you to reflect on the session and try out any ideas, techniques or action plans discussed. You can book further One at a Time appointments; however many feel that their issues can be addressed in a one or two sessions.

I've previously attended an 'one at a time' appointment, but have lost my re-booking link...

If you have already attended a one at a time appointment with the team this year and have lost your re-booking link, there's no need to re-register - simply email us on student-counselling@glasgow.ac.uk to receive a copy of the link from our Admin Team.
