Intern with a Member of Scottish Parliament

The John Smith Centre Parliamentary Internship Programme was launched in Spring 2017 and is designed to address the inequality of opportunity in access to internship work experience.

The Internship Programme creates hands-on learning opportunities for students to engage in frontline public service roles, and provides a platform from which young people can examine and evaluate the role of public servants and elected representatives today.

Through the structured 10-week placement programme running from January to April, our interns have the opportunity to work in parliamentary and constituency settings in close cooperation with their host MSPs and their staff, enabling them to develop a range of workplace relevant skills and an appreciation for the value of a career in public service.

The John Smith Centre are proud to pay our interns above the Real Living Wage.

These internships are typically advertised in September each year for a January start. The John Smith Centre are hoping to run a second programme from September to December in 2022 with roles being advertised in June.
