Use of Debate as an Authentic, Active Learning Assessment to Enhance Student Engagement and Development
Debate is an authentic, active learning activity that promotes student engagement, encourages deep learning and enhances development of desirable graduate attributes, including critical thinking and communication skills. We introduced debate as a summative assessment method in a new MSc course and from our personal reflections and routine course evaluation, we noted that students engaged enthusiastically with, had positive perceptions of and performed well in this type of assessment. This interactive workshop will provide participants with an overview of our work, including a toolkit for how to run a successful debate assessment and the opportunity to engage in a mock debate.
