Four gold coins lay near-forgotten in cabinets in The Hunterian for over 200 years, until recent analysis overturned long-standing views about their authenticity. Dismissed as forgeries since the mid-19th century, results suggest that these coins are in fact genuine and reveal a long-lost Roman Emperor Sponsian. The findings have received worldwide media attention since being published in November, generating ongoing public interest and debate.

Join Professor Paul N. Pearson, University College London, and Jesper Ericsson, Curator of Numismatics at The Hunterian, in the Hunterian Museum after hours to find out more about the coins, clues and controversies around them.
