The Hunterian and the National Library of Scotland are delighted to present this exclusive screening of Queen of Scots, a dramatic fictionalised account of the life of Mary, filmed in the late 1960s.

This television drama was broadcast on Scottish Television in November 1961. With a cast of around 60 actors, it was an ambitious, lavishly costumed TV drama telling the story of Mary, Queen of Scots. All 104 minutes were filmed live! The movie is surviving material from the clearout of the Scottish Television library when it moved from the Theatre Royal to Cowcaddens.

Queen of Scots was taken out of the master film vault in 2019 and the full length production was discovered. Technicians scanned the film to digital file and a small screening was arranged at the National Library of Scotland, Kelvin Hall on 6 February 2019 - probably the first time anyone had seen it since the 1960s.

Join us in the National Library of Scotland film theatre for this free and exclusive screening, complete with popcorn!
