A public symposium hosted jointly by The Hunterian and History of Art, University of Glasgow.

This free symposium celebrates the reopening of the Burrell Collection later this month and explores artist James McNeill Whistler’s relations with industrialist collectors including Glasgow’s Sir William Burrell. It also explores the role of regional industrial cities in shaping Whistler’s art and ideas.

Speakers include art historians and curators from the University of Glasgow, National Galleries, Glasgow Museums and the University of York. The day will conclude with a plenary lecture to be delivered by Prof Frances Fowle (University of Edinburgh/National Galleries of Scotland and Senior Trustee, Burrell Collection).
