This illustrated talk by Hunterian Associate Lin Cunningham offers an introduction to the remarkable and unique collection of original textile designs on paper which form part of the Stoddard Templeton Archive.

Although the collection was created by several prestigious Scottish carpet manufacturing companies, many of these designs could have been applied to a variety of woven or printed textiles. The breadth and quality of the work details the development of surface pattern design - from the Arts and Crafts Movement to the influence of Pop Art - and includes both intricate repeat patterns and distinctive Art Deco and Modernist rug designs. This distinctive collection includes work by both in-house design staff and commissions from design studios across Europe.

The talk will reveal how such a fascinating collection came to be made, and introduces some of the talented men and women who contributed to it.
