Our archives

The images of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II are held in the University of Glasgow Archives and Special Collections. We house the Scottish Business Archives. The images of the late Queen at John Brown & Co Shipbuilders are from the papers of the company’s director, Sir Stephen Pigott, 1880-1955.

Queen Elizabeth

RMS Queen Elizabeth was launched on 27 September 1938, by Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother.  Both the then HRH Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, and her sister HRH Princess Margaret attended the launch with their mother. At the time the Queen Elizabeth was build it was the largest passenger liner ever constructed, a title it kept for over 50 years.

Vanguard

HMS Vanguard was launched at John Brown & Co Shipbuilders, Clydebank on 30 November 1944 by HRH Princess Elizabeth, later Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It was the late Queen’s first solo ship launch.

Caronia

RMS Caronia was launched at John Brown & Co Shipbuilders, Clydebank on 30 October 1947 by HRH Princess Elizabeth, later Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia was launched on 16 April 1953 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Now retired from royal service, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith in Edinburgh.

William Teacher & Sons Ltd
