The award-winning Small Animal Hospital is located on the stunning Garscube Estate Campus, a 10-minute drive from the vibrant “West End” of Glasgow and less than one hour from Loch Lomond. The hospital is staffed by a friendly and dynamic multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, resident/interns, RVNs and support staff, allowing us to offer a range of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to approximately 17,000 cases a year.
The hospital has 4 fully equipped theatres, a fabulous diagnostic imaging suite with on-site MRI and CT, C-arm fluoroscopy and high specification GE ultrasound machines, a range of Olympus and Karl Storz endoscopes for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, an on-site linear accelerator, dedicated ICU and a busy radioiodine unit.
In addition to a well-equipped in-house laboratory we also have the advantage of being supported by a fantastic team of pathologists, clinical pathologists and infectious disease experts just 5 minutes’ walk away in the Veterinary Diagnostic Services Unit.
School of Veterinary Medicine
The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine is renowned for teaching, research and clinical provision, attracting students, researchers and clinicians from around the world. Our internationally accredited school provides expert referral services via the Small Animal Hospital, the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare and the Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health & Welfare, alongside a full range of Veterinary Diagnostic Services for animal owners and referring practitioners throughout the UK and beyond.
The school is ranked 1st in the UK for Veterinary Medicine in the Complete University Guide 2022 for the fourth consecutive year, and was ranked top amongst the UK veterinary schools for research quality in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014).
In addition to the highly acclaimed Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery degree, the School offers an MSci/BSc(Hons)/BSc Veterinary Biosciences programme, dedicated to those areas of science that underpin veterinary medicine. In 2017, the School introduced an MSc Advanced Practice in Veterinary Nursing, a flexible postgraduate online distance learning programme for Registered Veterinary Nurses and Vet Technicians which can be completed part-time over 3-6 years.
The School holds an Athena SWAN Silver departmental award, recognising the commitment at all levels to promoting gender equity, racial equality, and widening participation.
Opportunities
We are looking to recruit dynamic and enthusiastic colleagues to multiple disciplines, to help support and build our existing teams. The ideal candidates will hold a Diploma in their chosen speciality, or be residency trained and Diploma-eligible. They will enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide expert opinion on a range of clinical cases. Interprofessional support from specialist nurses, radiographers and physiotherapists ensures every case receives a high level of care within the hospital and a tailored treatment plan on discharge.
As a university hospital our key ethos is education and we wish to promote evidence based medicine through varied and impactful clinical research promoting intellectual curiosity and academic excellence in all our students (undergraduates, interns and residents). Clinical contribution to the undergraduate veterinary programme through teaching an assessment is an important part of the role to bring context and engage students in clinical reasoning from the outset and is one of the reasons we rank so highly as a veterinary school. Support and additional training is available for all clinicians whether or not they are from an academic background to develop effective and innovative learning and teaching practices to enhance student success.
We are keen to recruit colleagues who:
- Can offer expertise in clinical practice
- Can contribute to our team approach to veterinary medicine
- Can develop and contribute to the clinical teaching to undergraduates, interns and residents
- Want to undertake clinical scholarship contributing to the School’s excellence in clinical service and teaching
Our mission is to provide world-class care for our patients, and a world-class service for their owners and our referring vets.
