CoSE IT Senior Systems Administrator Governance

Job purpose
The Senior Systems Administrator (Governance) will ensure that College has a robust IT Governance framework and is compliant with University IT policies, regulatory requirements and Industry standards across the College of Science and Engineering (CoSE). The role will require a blend of strong technical and organisational skills to establish to develop/maintain the systems necessary to provide a secure governance platform.
Collaborating closely with other areas within CoSE IT as well as other services within the University (Finance, Procurement, Central IT), they will establish and maintain governance practices for procurement management, contracts, and licenses. They optimise maintenance contracts and develop a reporting model for financial performance of the IT budgets across the Schools in conjunction with the budget holder and finance team.
Main duties & responsibilities
- Manage the Ivanti Helpdesk system to record and track progress against any IT issues or Service Requests, that are assigned to the Governance function and identify trends and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
- Implement and maintain a robust, secure licence and reporting infrastructure, maintaining accurate records of computer contracts, IT equipment, system configurations and software licenses in various databases.
- Develop and maintain external relationships with suppliers and vendors to procure software for the schools.
- Provide support for installation and maintenance of software and licencing components in Linux and Windows server environments - including patching and upgrading to improve service and manage vulnerability risks.
- Identify and assess IT Governance related risks and assist with the development and implementation of any compliance controls for the College.
- Regularly monitor and analyse IT practices, systems, and guidance to ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., GDPR) including thorough management of software licensing to maintain adherence to licensing agreements.
- Conduct analysis and provide results/reports to the Service Resilience Manager to support technical and financial decision making.
- Any other reasonable duties and projects which may from time to time be required by the Line Manager or Head of College IT.
Knowledge and qualifications
Essential
- Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar role(s).
- Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
Skills
Essential
- Extensive knowledge and practical experience of operating systems and software, within a networked environment, such as Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Linux and mobile device management (MDM) applications.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to analyse complex issues, identifying the root cause and implement effective solutions to prevent any re-occurrence.
- Strong analytical skills and logical approach when evaluating or reviewing policies and guidelines, to ensure appropriate courses of action.
- Ability to work independently and exercise substantial personal responsibility and autonomy, as well as working as part of an IT team, and wider IT community.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills adapting own style to meet the needs of others.
Desirable
- Skills in working with a range of server operating systems, e.g. Windows Server, Linux including in virtualisation environments

- Proven experience of installing, configuring, and supporting specialist software
- Experience of technical management of software licences.
- Experience of managing maintenance contracts and licence agreements.
- Experience working in the field of data privacy and security regulations from an IT perspective.
- Previous experience of working in an audit / assurance capacity within an IT environment.
- Experience of working with external suppliers to procure hardware, software, or services.
- Experience developing standard operating procedures, processes and training materials.
- Prior experience of working in a University or Higher Education environment.

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,232 - £36,924 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
