International Women's Day events
To celebrate International Women's Day, our Student Representative Council (SRC) is running a series of events that celebrate the achievements of women and promote gender equality within our University and beyond.
The SRC will be fundraising throughtout the week to support Rape Crisis Glasgow. This charity supports women and girls who have been raped, sexually assaulted, or sexually abused at some point in their life. Their umbrella organisation Rape Crisis Scotland is the Student Representative's partner in our pioneering ‘Let’s talk about sexual violence’ prevention training.
The Gilchrist Postgraduate Club, named for the first female University of Glasgow graduate, is hosting an exhibition featuring stories of some of the University’s remarkable women which we’ve created with Archive Services. This will be open to all students & members of the public until Friday 10th March (8am-11pm) for you to enjoy these alumni stories.

Film screening of ‘Hidden Figures’
African Caribbean Society

‘Hidden Figures’ tells the story of three black women and their involvement with NASA operations. A biographical drama which has been nominated for two Golden Globes and three Academy Awards.
Film Screening of ‘Girlhood’
GU French Society
7pm-10pm – Williams Room, McIntyre Building
‘Girlhood’ is a French coming-of-age film that follows the life and challenges of Marieme, a girl from the Parisian banlieues. The film discusses and challenges conceptions of race, gender and class; it captures the stories of black teenagers, something generally underdeveloped in French cinema.
Women of Scotland Subcrawl
GULGBTQ+
6:30pm – start Champion’s Bar, QMU
GULGBTQ+’s main event for the week. This involves hopping on and off the subway at various stops to head to the nearest pub – each stop of the evening will be dedicated to an inspirational woman from Scotland and a few words will be said about them. The crawl will end in SWG3 Poetry Club, just in time to take part in the FemSoc event later that night. Locations tbc.
Big Wednesday Night Pub Quiz: IWW Edition

Join FemSoc for an International Women’s Day party at the Poetry Club from 10-2. All dancing will be for a good cause as proceeds from the night will be split between Glasgow Rape Crisis and Scottish Transgender Alliance. Entry to the event will be £4.
Debate: Theresa May has been bad for women in politics

This show debate will focus on the value of representation of women in politics, with some of the best female speakers from around Scotland. Come and listen to somefantastic speakers and engage in an important issue for women’s representation.

FGM (female genital mutilation) is a violation of the human rights of girls and women. Yet each year around 3 million girls are subject to FGM. UNICEF – together with the United Nations Population Fund – lead the biggest global programme to end FGM. In line with International Women’s Week, UNICEF On Campus is holding a ‘Women’s Week’-themed pub quiz featuring all your favourites, from Beyonce to Jane Goodall, Oprah to Malala, Princess Diana to J.K. Rowling. Funds raised go to UNICEF.

A highlight of IWW is Isabella Elder Feminist Society’s annual production of Eve Ensler’s ‘Vagina Monologues’, directed and performed by students. Previous productions have had wonderful reviews and this year should be no different. Tickets will be £3 for the show, or £4 for show and after-party. Proceeds and donations go to Rape Crisis Glasgow.

For a perfect end to IWW, we move upstairs for IEFS’s after-show party, where the DJ will play music from women and non-binary artists all night. If not bought as part of the show, tickets are £1 on the door. Once again, all proceeds and donations to Rape Crisis Glasgow.
‘Maleficient’ Film Screening

Before the start of the screening, Rape Crisis Glasgow will be coming in to talk about the work they carry out and what we, as a student body, can do to assist them in their efforts. This will be followed by a showing of the Disney movie Maleficient, a feminist twist on the classic tale of the Sleeping Beauty.

QMU Life Member and Alumni Talk

As an end-of-week bonus, the theme of this Life Member and Alumni Talk is activism. With a focus on women’s rights and the role student groups play, a number of individuals will speak on their work and experiences.
Professor Anne Anderson, Dr Vikki Turbine, Christine Hamilton, and Ellie Munro will all be speaking, and a number of QMU board members will be taking part in the discussion.
Open to all students and QMU life members as well as their guests.
