We are pleased to collaborate with Aye Write, Glasgow's book festival, to bring one of Hong Kong's most celebrated crime writers to Scotland. In Chan's newly translated novel Second Sister, a librarian finally living a stable life after an impoverished upbringing comes home to find her teenage sister has jumped to her death. Part detective novel, part revenge thriller, the novel explores themes of sexual harassment, internet bullying and teenage suicide – and vividly captures the zeitgeist of Hong Kong today. It was selected by Yazhou Zhoukan magazine as one of the ten best Chinese novels in 2017.
Chan made his debut as writer in 2008, with the short story The Murder Case of Jack and the Beanstalk which was shortlisted for the 6th Mystery Writers of Taiwan Award. Chan won this award the following year with The Locked Room of Bluebeard. After receiving third place in the Comic Ritz Movie Novel Award with Justifiable Deduction and also third place in the 10th Ni Kuang Science Fiction Award with the short story Time Trading Center, Chan's crime mystery The Man who Sold the World won the Soji Shimada Award in 2011. The rights to Chan's work The Borrowed have been sold in more than ten countries, and the film rights sold to director Wong Kar-Wai. In 2017 The Borrowed was ranked top in Japan's Shukan Bunshun Foreign Mystery Best Ten and Honkaku Mystery Foreign Best Ten. It also ranked second in the Japan Booksellers’ Award 2018 (foreign section) and received the Booklog Award 2018 (foreign fiction section).
