Alumnus pitches on Dragon’s Den

Bug Bakes is the UK’s first product to use insects as a sustainable protein source for dogs.

While studying at the University of Glasgow Ross began his research for the company after learning that 20% of the global environmental impact of the meat industry can be attributed to pet food.

He spent the last two years at university coming up with his idea, creating a product and testing it. His business Bug Bakes all started in his home; made, packed and labelled by hand.

Ross said: “I learned about insect protein while studying, I came across a paper published by the UN which urged western countries to adopt insect protein and that’s what set it all off. Pet food has an enormous impact on the environment without many people realising it. The chance to let millions of people know about this issue, and potentially get a life changing deal with a Dragon was too good to turn down.”

Since the show Ross has been able to grow the team, find a factory to outsource production, and develop a dog food which will launch later this year.
