About
How To Raise The Wind was commissioned by Nordlysfestivalen 2022, The Northern Lights Festival, Tromsø. In this through-composed work for string quintet and the duo, they take inspiration from the fantastic worlds of Highland folk tales. The music is based on the rhythmic drive and melodic focus of traditional music, but is arranged as classical-contemporary chamber music, with the string quintet as the works structural foundation.
Sarah-Jane Summers and Juhani will be joined by a string quintet comprised of Norwegian double bassist Rikard Toften Holst, and four Scottish musicians who are mainstays on our network: Seonaid Aitken and Katrina Lee on violin, Patsy Reid on viola, and Alice Allen on cello. How to Raise the Wind will be performed at Celtic Connections 2023, and along with its Scottish tour of our network, the project will be taken to the Oslo Kammermusikkfestival and on a Norwegian/Finnish tour.
University of Glasgow is delighted to host this exciting show, with huge thanks to Chamber Music Scotland who are greatly subsiding this tour, and enabling this show to be performed in the Music in the University professional Thursday Lunchtime Series.
