The re-hang of the Hunterian Art Gallery will include a group of miniatures of Mughal Emperors painted in Delhi in the middle of the 19th century. They were presented to The Hunterian in 1867, and it not clear if they have ever been displayed before. Miniature painting had flourished at the Mughal court since the 16th century, but by the mid-19th century Indian artists were producing miniatures for the souvenir market, with European customers in mind. Before putting these jewel-like paintings on show, The Hunterian has investigated their history and provenance, and technical analysis has been carried out to determine how they can be displayed safely.

Join curator Joseph Sharples and conservation scientist Michela Botticelli to find out more about the history behind these miniature portraits and their composition.
