Short Description

The course provides an introduction to Geology and the Geosciences, focusing on key skills and ideas essential to Level 1 courses in Earth Sciences, Geology and Geography subjects.

Assessment

One 1500-word essay (40%)

One 750-word field report (20%) 

Two x 30-minute timed set exercises (20% each)

Course Aims

To introduce students to the discipline of Geology and to enable them to develop academic literacies needed for Level 1 undergraduate study in Earth Sciences, Geology and Geography degrees.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Explain the concepts involved in basic geological ideas (for example, formation and structure of the Earth, plate tectonics, origin of different rock types, geological hazards)

■ Analyse geological maps, cross sections and models in 3D to explain the structure and history of regions

■ Communicate Geology theories and concepts in a logical and effective manner, using key terminology from this field of study, as required for University Level 1 course

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
