Short Description

The course provides an introduction to English Literature, focusing on key skills required to analyse and evaluate examples of poetry, prose fiction and drama.


2 hours per week for 22 weeks (and one revision session) on either:

Tuesdays, 18.30-20.30

Thursdays, 10.00-12.00


At enrolment students will select one of the two sessions. There will be no opportunity to change session.

Course Aims

■ To put in place basic understanding and skills appropriate to Level 1 undergraduate study in the College of Arts and knowledge and understanding of the academic discipline of English Literature.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students should be able to:

■ Identify key themes in literature and analyse the linguistic techniques used to develop these in set texts.

■ Correctly and confidently use key terminology of literary study.

■ Write essays in an appropriate academic style.

■ Communicate responses to relevant topics in group discussion.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
