On 1 October (14:30-15:30, Gilbert Scott Room 226), the ‘Peaceful, Secure, and Empowered Societies’ Interdisciplinary Research Theme (IRT) welcomed to Glasgow Dr Florian Weigand, Co-Director of the Geneva-based Centre on Armed Groups and Research Associate at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Danish Institute for International Studies. Dr Weigand delivered a keynote talk on “Engaging Armed Groups.”

The ‘Peaceful, Secure, and Empowered Societies’ Interdisciplinary Research Theme (IRT) welcomed to Glasgow Dr Florian Weigand, Co-Director of the Geneva-based Centre on Armed Groups and Research Associate at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Danish Institute for International Studies. Dr Weigand delivered a keynote talk on “Engaging Armed Groups.” Armed groups are organised non-state actors who are willing and capable of using violence to achieve political objectives. During his presentation, Dr Weigand discussed about the efforts undertaken by the Centre for Armed Groups to reduce violence and end armed conflict as well as about his own recent research on how armed groups govern and interact with both domestic and external players.
Speaker Biographies:
Dr Florian Weigand is the Co-Director of the Centre on Armed Groups and a Research Associate at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Geneva Graduate Institute. His research focuses on political violence, smuggling, governance, international interventions and peacebuilding.
