Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 26th edition of our College newsletter. As always, I want to thank you all for your hard work over this term and look forward to a welcome Easter break. As we continue with hybrid ways of working and anticipate more changes in government Covid guidelines, please stay familiar with University guidance.

The Gilmorehill campus is continuing to evolve, with many colleagues in the process of moving into the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre (ARC). I hope you’ll all engage with the many events planned for the Centre, including the EPSRC Net Zero showcase in June, which is covered in more detail in this issue.

As ever I am extremely proud to share the achievements and news from across the College. We highlight some of the recent activities from the Schools and I congratulate all colleagues on their recent grants, Fellowships and awards.

In Staff Communications we highlight the valuable role of the College Student Support Officers and share an EU funding update from the Overseas Team. We profile Professor Andrew Sutherland and Dr Claire Wilson from the School of Chemistry, as well as Dr Steffan Gwyn from the College Research Support Team.

We hear about new grants with opportunities for staff to engage, including a new NERC Programme grant GALLANT and a Turing Development Network. As a computer scientist I am particularly pleased to see the latter and I urge researchers to contact Prof Ana Basiri about possible collaborations. I thank Ana and Jaime Toney for their hard work in leading on these significant research awards.

Our regular Awards and Prizes section recognises the success of CoSE staff and we hear the latest updates from the Graduate School and Internationalisation team. News roundup celebrates the recent appointment of Royal Society of Edinburgh Fellows and introduces a familiar face as the new University Clerk of Senate.

This issue’s Learning and Teaching section has a variety of stories including photos from the first in-person open day for the James Watt School of Engineering since 2020, and a bilingual workshop between Pakistan and Scotland.

I hope you enjoy reading about the range of activities across the College and as ever I welcome any comments or suggestions for future issues.

Best wishes

Muffy
