COSE Student Support Officers

SSO IMAGEAs we approach the spring exam diet and all its associated stresses, we would like to take the opportunity to flag the fact that the College of Science & Engineering has three Student Support Officers, providing non-academic advice and support across all Schools. These posts form part of a wider network across the university and aim to bridge the gap between schools and central services, whilst providing an extra layer of dedicated pastoral support within each school. Student Support Officers can provide:

  • practical non-academic advice
  • signposting
  • a confidential ‘listening ear’ service for students experiencing difficulties
  • help accessing specialist support (internal or external)

Areas we can assist with include but are not limited to: mental health and wellbeing, finance, study skills, and accommodation.

Our team is here to help, so please do keep us in mind should you encounter students who are struggling or in distress. Students and staff are encouraged to contact their School’s Support Officer directly, as required. Staff should also feel free to get in touch with any questions about the service, or to discuss ways of working together.

We look forward to developing the service within the College and thank you for your support.  Find your School’s Student Support Officer and their contact details HERE

ERC announces 2023 call dates

The ERC (European Research Council) has announced dates for its 2023 grant calls. The big news is that the Starting Grants close in October of this year (2022).

The Starting Grant submission deadline is set for 25 October 2022, while the Consolidator and Advanced Grants have their deadlines in 2023 - on 2 February and 23 May, respectively.

All 2023 deadlines:

  • Starting Grant – 25 October 2022
  • Consolidator Grant – 2 February 2023
  • Advanced Grant – 23 May 2023
  • Synergy Grant – 8 November 2022
  • Proof-of-Concept Grant – 24 January; 20 April; 14 September 2023

ERC grants give researchers from across the globe significant funding, time and space to pursue their biggest research ideas. Applicants can propose projects in any research field, on any topic.

Starting Grants are for talented early-career researchers having already produced excellent supervised work, ready to work independently, showing potential to be independent research leaders and who received their PhD between January 2016 and December 2020 (up to EUR 1.5m).

Consolidator Grants are for internationally competitive researchers who've already shown some independence, wishing to either build or strengthen their research team, and who received their PhD between January 2011 and December 2015 (up to EUR 2m).

Advanced Grants are for internationally recognised, established, leading, senior principal investigators. Candidates will typically have received their PhD more than 12 years ago, although there is no requirement to hold a PhD (up to EUR 2.5m).

2022 submissions

In the ERC’s 2022 calls, CoSE has submitted 5 applications to the Starting Grants, with 12 expected to the Consolidator Grants, and 3 to the Advanced Grants.
