This course offers an introduction to the life and work of John Calvin, focusing on a critical examination of his theology through study of the Institutes of the Christian Religion, and a consideration of the historical legacy and cultural effects of his life and work.

The standard assessments for this course are: 

■ Essay 2000 words - 50% 

■ Essay 1500 words - 40% 

■ Source critical exercise 500 words - 10% 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available: 

■ There are no alternatives to the assessments, but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (Students should follow the usual process for extensions).

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ gain a deeper understanding of the life and work of John Calvin;

■ engage in critical reading of relevant theological texts;

■ deepen their understanding of the reception of Calvin's life and work;

■ develop critical self-assessment of their own reading and writing.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ give a critical account of the historical context of John Calvin;

■ analyse the content of Calvin's Institutes of Christian Religion;

■ reflect critically on the theological and cultural influence of John Calvin and his theology.
