This course is designed to introduce those concerned with the practice of Christian ministry, including candidates in training for the Church of Scotland's ministries, to the history, theology and practice of Christian worship. The material will cover a broad spectrum of liturgical theology and practice, and the course will include guest speakers from a variety of traditions within Christianity
One two hour meeting weekly across both semesters
Coursework: Three 1000 word essays (each 33.33%)
Main Assessment In: April/May
This course will provide the opportunity to:
■ explore the place and significance of worship & liturgy within the life of Christian congregations.
■ explore the use of the bible within Christian worship.
■ introduce students to critical reflection on homiletics/preaching.
■ introduce students to theologies and patterns of sacramental practice.
■ map different liturgical traditions across the ecumenical spectrum and to be able to locate traditions related to the students professional practice context on this map.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ produce a clear outline account of the tradition of reflection on the shapes of Christian liturgical practice.
■ specify and describe a range of possible uses of the bible within Christian worship.
■ offer a clear outline account of the tradition of reflection on the aims and methods of Christian preaching.
■ complete homiletical exercises with particular texts (normally based on the current lectionary) and engage, co-operatively, in critical reflection on their own homiletical practice and that of others.
■ plan a service of baptism and a communion service according to the order of one Christian tradition or denomination.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
