This course provides students with the opportunity to learn about selected working practices of a theatre company or relevant arts organisation through hands-on involvement in a company currently at work in the sector.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Oral presentation on personal learning experience and on the host organisation (20 minutes) - 50%

■ Critical reflection on personal learning experience and outcomes (e.g. perceived strengths and weaknesses, identification of career goals) and on the host organisation (e.g. its purpose, its institutional structure and its location in the sector) (2500 - 3000 words) - 50%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ PowerPoint with substantial notes (equivalent to 2500 words) as an alternative to the oral presentation.

■ There is no alternative to the critical reflection, but a flexible deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course aims to:

■ allow students, through direct experience, to deepen their understanding of how theatre companies or arts organisations, and specific practitioners within them, operate;

■ introduce students to the world of work in the arts sector, thus enabling them to make more informed career choices subsequently; and,

■ encourage students to test their theoretical / conceptual understanding of practices and policies in the arts against the realities faced by companies working in the sector.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ write or speak in an informed fashion about working practices of theatres and/or arts organisations;

■ reflect critically on such working practices;

■ make informed choices as to further training or work in a particular aspect of the arts sector;

■ work collaboratively with professional practitioners on artistic projects and be more capable of contributing to such projects in future.
