This is a core course in the single honours curriculum that allows students to work as a group in response to one theme, issue or idea through a range of methodologies leading to a formal presentation

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Group performance - 50%

■ Individual contribution for active participation in workshops, seminars and the final performance - 20%

■ One 2500-word critical reflection - 30%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ Written performance pitch (3500 words) OR solo performance (live or in alternative medium) as an alternative to the group performance.

■ Written self-evaluation reflecting on seminar contribution OR learning journal (1500 words) as an alternative to the individual contribution.

■ There is no alternative to the critical reflection, but a flexible deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor. 

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ encourage students to develop a more structured approach to, and selfconscious awareness of, research methods relevant to the study of theatre and performance

■ introduce students to concepts and methods appropriate to the study of theatre through historiographic, ethnographic, and/or practice-based research

■ encourage students to develop skills in targeting and addressing specific research questions and problems through research, and practical experimentation

■ raise students' awareness of the ethical issues and potential problems related to pursuing research into contemporary theatre practice, whether as an observer or practitioner

■ develop students' decision-making abilities and skills as collaborators within a group situation, working toward a common goal

By the end of this course students will be able to -

■ demonstrate advanced qualitative research skills and an awareness of the critical issues involved in weighing up evidence from different sources

■ demonstrate skills in conceiving and executing research-related practical experimentation, and an awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing research through practice

■ demonstrate skills in team-building and collaboration, and develop verbal and visual presentational skills
