This course explores the nature of sound and our interaction with it as an aesthetic and culturally significant material. The course takes a practice-based approach, focusing on creative recording and manipulation of sound, critical listening, and composing with sonic materials.

Sonic Arts: Interacting with Sound, MUSIC2022/MUSIC2023/MUSIC4084

Sound-based composition of c. 5 minutes (80%) with accompanying critical commentary of c.1000 words (20%)

This course aims to:

■ develop students' awareness of sound as an aesthetic and culturally significant material through creative practice

■ develop students' understanding of creative recording, sound manipulation and other compositional techniques

■ engage students in listening critically to a wide variety of sonic materials

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ undertake technically proficient sound recording and advanced sound manipulation in pursuit of specific creative goals

■ employ a range of advanced computer-based tools for creating and interacting with sound

■ demonstrate advanced technical knowledge and proficiency in the production of sonically rich and well-contextualised musical outputs

■ display evidence of creative thinking and effective problem-solving in realising sound works

■ develop sophisticated aural acuity through advanced sonic practice
