This course introduces students to basic principles in harmony and counterpoint.

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ Develop awareness of aspects of musical style in a range of historical periods.

 

■ Explore the principles of counterpoint and harmony giving students experience in the technique of tonal music.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students should be able to:

 

■ Apply principles of historical style and tonal harmony to a variety of exercises

■ Analyse music using a range of techniques appropriate to the style and period.

■ Formulate musical passages with stylistic acuity according to a variety of classical and other models

■ Engage fluently with conventions of music notation.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
