Short Description

This course introduces the Early Gaelic (= Old Irish) language, covering key grammatical topics. By the end of the course, the student will be reading and translating short passages (Gaelic to English and English to Gaelic).

Assessment

The mark for this module will be determined on the basis of four class exercises throughout (47.5%), general participation (2.5%), and a class test at the end of the course (50%).

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Introduce the orthography, phonology and grammatical structure of the early Gaelic language;

■ Develop awareness of the historical development of the Gaelic language in its early written forms;

■ Provide a basic knowledge of the early Gaelic language.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Display a basic understanding of key aspects of Early Gaelic (Old Irish);

■ Perform translation and grammar exercises under test conditions.

■ Understanding of literary texts

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
