This course will introduce you to the place-names of Scotland, particularly those of Celtic origin. The course's linguistic content requires no prior knowledge of Celtic languages. The course will develop your skills as an independent and critical thinker by empowering you to conduct your own original place-name research on an area or topic of your choice, as well as your skills as an effective communicator via presentation of place-name research to a range of audiences. You will learn about the significance of place-names for understanding Scotland's past and informing Scotland's future.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Practical skills assessment (define a place-name element) (500 words) - 25%

■ Practical skills assessment (apply established methodology and protocols in presentation of data) (500 words) - 25%

■ Oral assessment/presentation (10 mins) - 50%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the written assessments, but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ Video presentation or one-to-one presentation as an alternative to the oral presentation.

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course aims to:

■ Introduce you to the languages of Scotland's place-names

■ Introduce you to the methodology and sources required for academic place-name research

■ Enhance your knowledge of Celtic languages (medieval and modern), history, literatures and cultures

■ Provide you with the skills to conduct original place-name research

■ Provide you with skills to inform Scotland's future by addressing pressing contemporary challenges such as: the safeguarding and revitalisation of minoritised languages, dialects and cultures; and environmental sustainability

■ Provide you with opportunities to develop a range of transferable skills, at the same time as attaining ILOs of your programme, including: effective communication of information, ideas and arguments for a range of audiences, both in oral and in written form; and the ability to gather, select and organise material from a variety of sources and offer a critical evaluation of its significance 

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Define place-name elements of Celtic origin

2. Apply established methodology and protocols for place-name research in order to present data from a range of sources

3. Evaluate the significance of place-name research for addressing pressing contemporary challenges

4. Produce material appropriate to a specific audience presenting place-name research
