This course will develop students' skills in Early Gaelic by reading texts in Early Gaelic (Old or Middle Irish), and discussing thoroughly points of literary, textual and grammatical interest.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ 20% 3 practical exercises

■ 25% essay (2000 words)

■ 5% preparation and participation

■ 50% examination

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the written assessments, but flexible deadlines, extra time, or alternative space can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

It is the default expectation that all courses will offer opportunities for reassessment or deferred assessment. Where it is not possible to offer this in some assessment components, the grade achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade, and any exceptions for this course are described below.

This course aims to: 

■ develop the linguistic skills gained in the first year of Early Gaelic language;

■ introduce new texts, problems, and skills, such as working on texts not edited for student readers, and use of dictionaries and other tools;

■ broaden and extend familiarity with the range and style of Early Gaelic texts;

■ increase awareness of the language changes from Old to Middle Irish.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

■ demonstrate a good knowledge of the texts studied, including their literary significance;

■ translate passages of Early Gaelic and comment on grammatical matters;

■ apply knowledge of Early Gaelic to unseen passages.
