The course aims to bring the student up to a basic reading ability in Old Irish. Teaching will consist of a rapid and thorough grammatical explanation of the language.

Class will meet for 1.5 hours twice weekly in semester one and one hour weekly in semester two.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ 20% class exercises

■ 20% written exercises

■ 5% unseen translation exercise

■ 5% preparation and participation

■ 50% examination

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the written assessments, but flexible deadlines, extra time, or alternative space can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

It is the default expectation that all courses will offer opportunities for reassessment or deferred assessment. This course aims to:

■ introduce the orthography, phonology and grammatical structure of the early Gaelic language; 

■ develop awareness of the historical development of the Gaelic language in its earliest written forms;

■ provide a reading knowledge of the early Gaelic language;

■ introduce the student to early Irish prose.

By the end of this course, students will be able to: 

■ demonstrate a basic understanding of Early Gaelic (Old Irish);

■ translate short passages of Early Gaelic prose under examination conditions.
