Short Description
This course develops the topics of design and manufacturing including: concurrent engineering; interchangeability; limits and fits; materials selection theory and introduction to CES; costing; design for casting; design for sheet metal forming; heat treatments for metals; inspection and quality control.

Course Aims
The aim of this course is to further develop the students' knowledge and understanding of engineering application, practice and the manufacture and their relation to engineering design.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ describe basic engineering components, materials and manufacturing processes;
■ discuss the interaction between manufacturing process and design and cost of components;
■ produce engineering drawings to recognised engineering standards;
■ use materials and process selection theory and the associated Edupack software;
■ understanding theory for costing manufacture processes
■ understand the fundamentals of two basic manufacturing processes (casting and sheet forming) and be able to apply them in appropriate contexts
■ describe applications and limitations of inspection techniques.
