Short Description

An independent research project, on a topic chosen by the student, written in German, with equivalent status to an Honours Option.

Written essay (2,600 words) - 60%

Reflective journal (400 words) - 30%

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ build on the linguistic and cultural experience of the Year Abroad in a German-speaking country through providing the opportunity to undertake independent research on a topic chosen by the student;  

■ develop confidence and competence in producing a written analysis of the chosen topic in German;  

■ develop confidence and competence in discussing the chosen topic in German in a viva (oral exam) setting;  

■ encourage reflective engagement with the learning process by means of a written journal in German.  

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

■ formulate a coherent research topic relating to the culture or society of a specific German-speaking country; 

■ select and evaluate relevant bibliographic and other resources; 

■ articulate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the chosen topic, arguing and synthesizing clearly and coherently in formal written and spoken German; 

■ use a range of advanced syntactic, idiomatic and lexical German structures in presenting the argument in written and spoken form; 

■ reflect on the learning process in writing and in oral discussion.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
