Short Description

The course develops skills in the reading of Latin texts, both prescribed and non-prescribed, and familiarises students with complex concepts of Latin grammar and syntax.

Timetable

Lectures: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9am over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus; weekly one hour seminar (choice of times) over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Expand knowledge of Latin vocabulary and morphology.

■ Introduce the syntax of complex Latin sentences.

■ Begin to develop reading skills through acquaintance with adapted passages of continuous Latin prose and verse.

■ Explain the linguistic features met in reading Latin.

■ Enable the translation from English into correct Latin single words and brief phrases.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Apply their knowledge of Latin grammar, morphology and syntax, and specified Latin vocabulary, to translate simple and complex sentences from Latin into idiomatic English.

■ Translate a simple unseen passage of continuous Latin prose into idiomatic English.

■ Explain the linguistic features met in reading both seen and unseen Latin passages and sentences.

■ Supply the correct forms of individual Latin words and simple phrases. 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
